When asked what my best advice is for anyone who wants to groom cats successfully, I always encourage an abundance of love and treats. They are the fundamentals that build the foundation of trust, and should be utilized often in the beginning, middle, and end of our encounters with cats.
Love in our attitude, handling, and understanding really do matter. Treats of a wide variety with purrsonal preferences noted create positive associations which increases tolerance of and compliance with less than desirable grooming in those sensitive areas.
Of course, using safe tools that feel comfortable and give good results is important. Taking as much time as needed, which may include multiple short sessions instead of a single longer one, is the respectful way toward easier grooming sessions. If the task is too daunting, seek assistance from a holistic, compassionate-minded cat groomer.
